Tyrannosaurus Rex Tooth Fragment, from Hell Creek Formation, Eastern Montana, USA (REF:TREX30)

Tyrannosaurus Rex may be the most famous of all the dinosaurs (Tyrannosaurus meaning Tyrant Lizard, Rex meaning king) or simply T. Rex for short. Despite this famous reputation the T.Rex still has a lot of question marks surrounding it and many unanswered questions. 

Was it a lone hunter or pack hunter. Was it a hunter or instead a scavenger. Then there is the debate of whether T.Rex had feathers like some Late Cretaceous Dinosaurs had, its potential speed, and what its roar would have sounded like, was it like that in the Jurassic park movies for instance or completely different entirely.  Only with more research and hopefully possible new discoveries we will answer these questions and many palaeontologists will no doubt be throwing around their theories and opinions. 

What is known and proven is that T. Rex was a furious predator and extremely powerful, with up to 60 teeth, each one could grow up to 20cm (8 inches) long and bite with around 3 times the bite force of a lion. Some fossil finds of bones from Triceratops and Edmontosaurus (herbivore dinosaurs and typical prey for the T.Rex) shows that Tyrannosaurs could crunch through bone, with bite marks found on the fossil bones and analysis of fossilised T.Rex coprolite (dung) showing that it contained the bones of its prey.

Found in Canada and the USA, and roaming the earth in the Late Cretaceous Period, 67-65 million years ago, the T.Rex could weigh up to 7000kg and growing up to 12 meters long (the equivalent of one and half London buses).

The Tyrannosaurus skull could grow over 1.5 meters (5 feet) and the cavity that housed the part of the brain responsible for smell was relatively large and indicates that the T.Rex would have had a good sense of smell to hunt it’s prey or locate dead bodies to scavenge.

The arms of the T.Rex are again open to debate of their purpose with several speculations being made. Though very small relative to overall body size, measuring only 1 meter (3.3 ft) long, studies of complete limbs found show the bones had a large areas for muscle attachment, indicating considerable strength.

Several notable Tyrannosaurus remains have been found in the Hell Creek Formation. During the Maastrichtian in the Late Cretaceous Period, this area was subtropical, with a warm and humid climate.

Since it was first described in 1905 Tyrannosaurs Rex has become a dinosaur that everyone knows and popular culture has only enhanced that. Whatever the true nature of this species, T.Rex will no doubt always be the King Of The Dinosaurs.
