Megalodon (meaning "big tooth") is an extinct species of Shark that lived approximately 15.9 to 2.6 Million Years ago, during the Cainozoic Era (middle Miocene to end of Pliocene).

Now scientifically name Otodus megalodon (previously known as Carcharodon or Carcharocles megalodon) O. Megalodon is regarded as one of the largest and most powerful predators in vertebrate history, and likely had a profound impact on the structure of marine communities. Fossil remains suggest that this giant shark reached a maximum length of 18 metres (59 ft) and had a world wide distribution.

Teeth

The most common megalodon fossils are its teeth. Diagnostic characteristics include: triangular shape, robust structure, large size, fine serrations, and visible v-shaped neck. Megalodon teeth can measure over 180 millimetres (7.1 in) in slant height or diagonal length, and are the largest in size of any known shark species.

Indonesian Megalodon Teeth

Indonesian Megalodon teeth are found in limestone deposits, unlike Meg teeth found in South Carolina, U.S.A. for example, which are found in river/ocean bottoms. This locality gives them lighter sand look in colour, though the colour can vary, some times with hints reds and browns. In some cases because the tooth has not been previously exposed to other elements they can have excellent condition to the enamel and serrations on the tooth.
