Residents of the Kurgan, Tyumen, Ekaterinburg and Chelyabinsk district observed a bright fireball in the sky at around 09:22am.

This fireball was captured on video by many and can be found online. Within moments the residents of Chelyabinsk heard and felt a powerful explosion which injured by flying glass fragments. Parts of the local zinc plant and a stadium were also damaged by huge shower of fragments which numbered in the thousands, many of these fragments were recovered from the snow covered ground by residents.

There fragments range from less than 1g to 1.8kg in weight and in size from a few mm to 6-10cm. It is estimated that the total mass collected by the locals was in excess of 100kg, possibly as high s 500kg. Fusion crusted stones from this fall are common with a black or brown fusion crust.

Some large fragments have been recovered from Chebarkful Lake where the main mess fell. Many small fragments were recovered from the hole in the ice. Over time around 640kg of fragments were recovered from the lake with the largest being around 540kg. It is estimated that over 1000kg of this meteorite has been recovered.
