Charoite is named from the only location in which it is found, the Charo River Valley, Yakutia, Russia.

Its colour ranges from pale lilac to deep purple, and it is rich in internal patterning but may also occur with streaks of green, black and orange colour as a result of Tinaksite and Aegerine impurities within the stone.
